PETCO Foundation Hopes to Raise Millions for Pets in Need
San Diego, CA (Vocus) March 8, 2007 -- There are thousands of animal shelters across the country filled with dogs, cats and other pets looking to find loving homes. These non-profit organizations not only care for animals until they find new homes, many also provide rescue, medical and counseling services.
That is why, each year, the PETCO Foundation's "Spring A Pet" campaign collects funds on behalf of these shelters to help them continue their efforts.
Now through Sunday, April 8, PETCO locations nationwide will be collecting donations that will go directly to local animal shelters.
"Donations given at each store remain in the local community," says PETCO Foundation Vice President and Director Paul Jolly. "Each PETCO store selects an animal welfare group that celebrates the human-animal bond, and then collects donations on that organization's behalf."
Last year's campaign raised more than $1.7 million.
Why donate:
•
Approximately eight million animals will flood animal shelters this year, and roughly four million will come during May, June, July and August as a result of thousands of litters born in the spring
•
Four to six million pets are euthanized each year
•
On average, it costs a shelter roughly $75 per spay/neuter surgery
•
Through generous donations animal welfare organizations are able to charge an affordable adoption fee
PETCO customers can help make a difference by purchasing Spring A Pet donation cards for a $1, $5, $10 or $20 donation. Customers donating $20 or more will receive a Red Ruff and Blue Mews "Making the Lives of Animals Brighter" decorative candle.
PETCO encourages customers through the Think Adoption First program to consider adoption before the purchase of any companion animal - even if it's one of the birds, reptiles, or small animals currently offered in PETCO stores. Studies Show Sugar Substitutes Dangerous for Pets-Beware Sweet Treats for Fido?
Though many owners can't help but indulge their pets with people treats, new studies show that xylitol, a sugar substitute may be extremely hazardous to the health of dogs. It is advised that owners be careful to keep products such as chewing gum, candy, baked goods, diet items and toothpastes that may contain xylitol away from dogs. Oftentimes, owners use treats to entice their pets to take medications. To avoid any complications with sweet people treats, owners can use the FLAVORx system to flavor their pet's medications to achieve compliance.
